Gert and Daisy 2

As I've said in another thread, the show isn't indicative of their best material, but listening to it yesterday I was struck by the naturalism of the performances - they definitely aren't going for the cariacature. Possibly that restraint contributes to the "gentle" sense of the programme. When you hear Elsie and Doris Waters speak in interviews they are relatively posh - ie they're not playing a version of themselves - so, script apart, credit to them for not descending to cartoon mode.

Looking up a few online sites at random, mention is made of the fact they wrote their own material - so I wonder whether this show - in the 50s, so already decades into a long career - indicates they had run out of material or whether they had simply realised the way radio would eat up long-treasured material which they could have otherwise toured the halls with, so chose not to throw their own work away.

Incidentally, Terry Nation went on to write for Tony Hancock in his post-BBC ITV phase.
